How to enable Flash for a single Chrome or Opera browser Extension

I tried to load the YoWindow extension in Opera today, which is a nice weather app except for the fact they're still using Flash instead of HTML5. Not for long, as Adobe plans to end support in 2020.

To enable it for a single site in Chrome or Opera, you can normally just click the lock in the address bar, then go to Site Settings. But that's a little tough when Flash is being used in a popup window inside an extension like YoWindow. There's no address bar, and no visible URL to manually enter into the settings, but that doesn't mean it's impossible. Here's how.

Opera

After installing an extension that uses Flash into Opera, you might see something like this. When I clicked the "Click to enable" link, nothing happened.

Open the extension in the Chrome store and copy the ID.

Open Opera's flash settings and paste the ID by itself as a new site to "allow" Flash. After that, the extension should display Flash, without enabling it for all sites.

Chrome

After installing an extension that uses Flash into Chrome (or Brave for that matter), you might see something like this. There's no link to enable Flash, and the "Help me" link is anything but.

Open the extension in the Chrome store and copy the ID.

The Chrome "Flash" settings screen is pretty worthless. You can delete existing sites, but you can't add a new site. (The YoWindow entry is in there because I took the screenshots out of order.)

Instead, open the "Flash" settings for the extension by appending chrome-extension:// to the beginning of the ID and then paste it into your address bar like this. Change the permission to "Allow" for the site. After that, the extension should display Flash, without enabling it for all sites.

chrome://settings/content/siteDetails?site=chrome-extension://extension_id
