Run Link Run (saving Zelda for 30+ years) A few years ago, on the 30th anniversary of the Legend of Zelda, Scott Lininger and Mike Magee open sourced a 3D version of the original LoZ. The site was taken down, but the code's still available to run!
Whatever happened to the webring? And what was the point? Once upon a time, search engines stunk, and web surfers couldn't find awful sites. So website owners joined hands in solidarity, and linked to one another's sites. And the webring was born.
The first website is still online (again) Did you know the very first website ever is available online, just as it was 30 years ago? Before google, yahoo, geocities, there it was - a few static pages linking to the entirety of the Internet at the time.
From text-driven s(hell) to mouse-driven marvel For posterity, here's a nearly 25 year old article about how Merrill Lynch went from a gargantuan text-driven app to something that wasn't (as they put it) a "usability nightmare". It's an interesting read if you're in the field, and some of their design choices are still employed in desktop apps.
A Wish List for the Modern PC My goal one evening this weekend was to open the directory where Windows store apps are installed, so I could write a script to backup files. Never figured that one out, but I did end up spending a couple hours reading through old PC Mag issues from 40 years ago. The magic of the Internet, lol. 🤷♂️
